I first became interested in diet as a teenager when I suffered with
irritable bowel syndrome and I struggled to maintain my weight; consequently
I decided to train as a dietitian. Since I qualified as a Dietitian, I’ve
worked in research environments looking at the role of nutrition and diet
in food allergy, inborn errors of metabolism, schizophrenia and gastrointestinal
disorders. I have also worked as a dietitian within the National Health
Service for several years covering a variety of specialities in both adults
and children, including eating disorders. I have also specialised in paediatric
nutrition, providing advice and training on dietary needs and feeding
problems in children.
As a dietitian, I am aware that eating is often about so much more than
food. In certain conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and eating disorders,
a healthy eating plan can only be achieved by exploring the reason as
to why people eat too little or too much and then identifying alternative
approaches to resolve these issues.
Dietary advice mainly focuses on the foods eaten and rarely looks at
the underlying problems. With this in mind I decided to undertake training
in psychotherapy to complement my dietetics and set up CAREFREE
EATING.
I recognised that by combining dietetics and psychotherapy, I would be
able to offer a more integrated approach, providing dietary advice and
support to help people to resolve the psychosocial issues surrounding
their eating behaviour and pattern.
